What are the differences between European sizes and Chinese sizes?

There are multiple differences between European sizes (EU sizes) and Chinese sizes (CN sizes) in clothing dimensions, which are mainly reflected in the following aspects:
Sizing Standards
EU sizes are usually formulated based on body measurements such as bust, waist, and hip circumferences. While there may be slight variations in sizing standards among different European countries in terms of details, they generally follow a unified system. For example, EU size 34 for women’s clothing corresponds to a bust of approximately 82–85 cm, a waist of 62–65 cm, and a hip of 88–90 cm.
CN sizes, on the other hand, are developed in accordance with the physical characteristics of the Chinese population and relevant national standards. China’s clothing sizing system adopts a clear size labeling method, such as "160/84A". In this label, "160" indicates height in centimeters, "84" refers to bust or waist circumference (depending on the type of clothing), and "A" represents the body shape classification.

Sizing Numerical Values
In general, the numerical values of EU sizes are relatively larger. Taking women’s clothing as an example, EU size 36 roughly corresponds to CN size M, but the measured values of bust, waist, and other dimensions for EU size 36 are slightly larger than those of the equivalent CN size M. For instance, the bust of EU size 36 may range from 86 to 89 cm, while the bust of CN size M is typically around 84 to 88 cm.
For men’s clothing, EU size 48 is approximately equivalent to CN size L. The bust of EU size 48 may be 100–104 cm, whereas the bust of CN size L is usually 96–100 cm.
Pattern Design
EU-sized clothing is generally designed with a looser fit, particularly in the shoulders, chest, and waist areas, which is more suitable for the taller stature and relatively more developed bones and muscles of European and American body types. For example, European-style suits feature a wider shoulder width and a larger bust, offering a loose and comfortable fit that exudes a grand and casual style.
CN-sized clothing patterns, by contrast, focus on fitting the relatively petite build and softer body lines of Asian people, with tailoring that emphasizes a slim fit and smooth silhouettes. A typical example is the Chinese cheongsam (qipao), whose pattern design closely follows women’s body curves, showcasing an elegant and dignified temperament.
When purchasing clothing, it is crucial to carefully check the size chart and select items based on your actual body measurements to ensure a proper fit.
