What is a cultural T-shirt, and what is its origin?
2026-01-14
Cultural T-shirts are commonly referred to as DIY T-shirts (Do It Yourself T-shirts) overseas, meaning T-shirts on which patterns or text are printed by the wearers themselves.
Origin and Development
The T-shirt originated in the United States. In the 1950s, crew neck shirts printed with patterns or text first appeared at motor racing events, and this form was later known as the cultural T-shirt. With the growing demand for personalization, people began to freely design patterns on T-shirts, giving rise to the DIY cultural characteristic of this garment.
Evolution of the Name
In Chinese, such T-shirts with printed design elements are called "cultural T-shirts". In English, however, the DIY concept is directly used as a suffix (in the term), reflecting the core idea of "designing by oneself".
